View Comments | View Details
WOMAD 09

Ticket Winners: Sara Norman and Paul Jones

Date: 13th - 15th March 2009

Location: Brooklands Park and TSB Bowl, New Plymouth, Taranaki

Cost: $209, day passes available. Early bird tickets have sold out.

Music Lineup: Arte Kanela, Bedouin Jerry Can Band, Brendan Power, Dengue Fever, Dona Rosa, Fat Freddy's Drop, Geoffrey Gurrumul, Gyuto Monks, Hinemoana Baker, Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara, Little Bushman Co, Lo Cor de la Plana, Diva Rokia Traore (Mali), Mihirangi, Mikidache, Moana and the Tribe, Mobile Sewing Company, People In Your Neighbourhood, Natacha Atlas, Rachel Unthank and the Winterset, Russ Jones, Sa Dingding, Seckou Keita Quartet, Seun Keuti, Shona Laing, Ska Cubano, Speed Caravan, U Shrinivasi, Anika Moa & band (NZ), The Sami Sisters (NZ) and Andrew White (NZ).

Facilities: Womad is a day (and evening) only event, accommodation is up to you but there are plenty of options. Toilets and fresh running water. Food Stalls and Global Village with the most amazing food from all corners of the world (I've heard some people say they go just for the food, and the music is a bonus!), Workshops, Kids Zone!. This year Womad is introducing the Sustainable Villiage, which is an education centre for sustainable living.

Environment: from womad.org > "WOMAD stands for World of Music, Arts and Dance, expressing the central aim of the WOMAD festival - to bring together and to celebrate many forms of music, arts and dance drawn from countries and cultures all over the world." Womad New Zealand is set in the beautiful Brooklands Bowl in New Plymouth. Bring a picnic, bring a rug, being the family and enjoy the comfort, safety and community that is Womad New Zealand.

Other Info: A truly all ages event, which makes it that much more special. What we love about is that you can go there with your family, spent time in the sun laying the grass and having a picnic, and feel the culture of the world, then meet up with your friends later and have a wee party and go hang out at the dance tent, so to speak (Mr Scruff played in 2007, it was awesome!).

Accommodation: Camping is available on-site and there are plenty of camp grounds in and around New Plymouth, including some spectacular spots right on the beach-front.

My best picks were in order from top pick : Suen Kuti (son of Fela Kuti) and Egypt 80 band- standout performance- An incredibly energetic ensemble of 17 band members on stage - providing backing to a politically asute frontman ! Lo cor de la plana -a bulshi French all male choir with atitude Rachel Unthank and the winterset - refreshing dark doom and gloom durges to rebalance all the enthusiastic, brightly coloured secind generation hippies. U Shrivinas and Speed Caravan were OK. Fat Freddies were decidedly dull, but the Little Bushman rocked BIG.

Please put me in the draw for tickets. I desperately need the fun and excitement in my boring, overworked and way underpaid little hundrum life and I can`t think of anything I`d love to do more than experience WOMAD. Thank you for the opportunity to win :o)
