General Info: Kiwiburn's art theme for 2011 is "TWISTED REALITY"
Build something. Fly something. Float something. Burn something-bring it to Kiwiburn in 2011.
Kiwiburn is a collective experience. Everybody contributes, everybody pays. As there are no paid performers at the event, there are no spectators and what is shared are the passions and dreams of those who gift them. You cannot "attend" Kiwiburn, but you can be a part of it.
There will be no money exchanged for anything at the event.
Due to this collective nature we cannot offer you a program or featured artist list. You can check out the list of registered theme camps and installations at www.kiwiburn.com, but as to the true nature of what will be at Kiwiburn, we have no idea-and that's half the beauty.
There will be art installations and people in costume, fire spinners, drummers, dancers, free spirits and healers.. but that's just us, and what we are doing..bring your passion and share with us your dreams.
Environment: Kiwiburn is New Zealand's annual Burning Man event. Kiwiburn is built on the 10 principles of Burning Man (see www.burningman.com for more information). Kiwiburn is a collective experience. Everybody contributes, everybody pays. As there are no paid performers at the event, there are no spectators and what is shared are the passions and dreams of those who gift them. You cannot "attend" Kiwiburn, but you can be a part of it.
Because of this, we can't tell you exactly what to expect. We can tell you that past burns have included multiple sound camps with DJs playing all night, amazing artwork, all night B movies, a heavy metal band, weird costumes, a pirate ship, a wedding ceremony, naked jelly wrestling (yes, really), impromptu band jams, a UV-lit bar, fashion shows, a cookie tree, a human gymkhana, an open-to-all temple, the thunderdome "fight club", all night dance parties, and so much more... and of course the burning of the man accompanied by literally hundreds of dancers and fire performers.
Check out the website at www.kiwiburn.com for photos, our forum and full information.
There will be no money exchanged for anything at the event.
Facilities:General free camping facilities, portaloos, running water but best to bring your own as well. No cell phone coverage. "The Festival site is about 1100m above sea level. Exposure to the elements is inevitable.
Bring plenty of warm clothing, and be aware that the weather can change very quickly. Camping space is plentiful. Come early to get the sweet spots. Please only camp in designated areas and follow the directions of the on-site Festival staff. There is about a 5 minute walk from the camping area to the Festival village.
Please keep within the boundaries of the festival, and as you wander around during the day or night be careful of obstacles and natural hazards."
Other Info: Best have a look at the Kiwiburn website, as there is heaps of good information on there. Radical self reliance means that you bring with you everything that you are going to require to camp at the event. Water, food and shelter are the primary needs.
Expect sun, expact rain, expect mozzies, non-natives can be very sensitive to sand fly bites. If you are planning on taking a dip in the lake at the site it may be wise to bring calamine lotion or something similar, as there are little critters living in the weed growing in the water that can leave some people with itchy little bites!
There is no trading and you will not be able to purchase anything at the festival. You should also bring something to share with the community, a performance, an art work, food, or gift, basically anything you would like to have at the event... this is not a rule that is in any way enforced... but Kiwiburn is about community and it is the giving that pulls us together.
This event is all ages - under 18's need to be accomonied by a parent or legal guardian (an older friend is not suffient!). Expect to be asked for ID.
