This weekend is a very eventful weekend on the New Zealand Outdoor Music Festival Calendar. Luminate Festival begins Thursday 28th, followed by Kiwiburn, Parachute and the Organic River Festival on Friday. Fiesta Del Sol and the MMM Bush Party are both happening in the Auckland region on Saturday 30th, as well as Sounday in Christchurch.

The Invasion of Parihaka

Today, 5 November, is the 128th anniversary of the invasion of Parihaka by 1500 armed constabulary and militia, led by two Members of Parliament. Parihaka had become a haven for dispossessed Maori throughout the country, attracted by the passive resistance to land confiscation taught by Parihaka leaders Tohu Kakahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai. On the morning of 5 November 1881 more than 2000 Parihaka people sat quietly while children greeted the army. The Riot Act was read out, the community's leaders were arrested, and the five-year occupation of Parihaka had begun.

It's looking rather huge. R&V08 has confirmed that it has sold more than 16,000 tickets already. Thats rather huge. The three day festival offers premium and VIP luxury camping zones where you turn up to the "Camp ground" and you get double beds, hot showers and power points etc. Premium prices too. This is camping my buddies, Auckland style!

Motherland Collective regretfully have announced that Soundsplash will not return in 2009. Soundsplash Eco Reggae Festival has been running since 2001 and has been great. All hope is not lost though as Motherland Collective have not said this it is the end of the Soundsplash vibe.

Spring Equinox 2008 is to welcome the spring and say goodbye to winter. It is going to be held in the North Loburn/Mt Thomas area, somewhere between Oxford and Rangiora, in a very suited-to-spring setting, amongst daffodils and blossom, with a line up of DJs to stimulate your body into moving in a way that some people call dancing.

Us outdoor crew had a run up to Parihaka Peace festival. I gotta say Departure Lounge made me proud to say that I live in the Garden City, and the whole event made me proud to say that I come from this country of ours, Aotearoa. The festival was magic, such a nice atmosphere, plenty of sunshine and positive messages about keeping ourselves and our environment healthy in this changing world. It's a MUST for next year if we're thinking about it, but never made it. Did you hear about Modules set? Funny but so much fun!

Tickets sales are progressing much faster than last year, with half of the 5000 tickets already sold. Sales are up in the north island this year, especially in Auckland. The event has also confirmed showers will be installed to compliment the flush toilets and improved fresh water supply. So with what we're predicting to be a sellout crowd, improved facilities, a traffic management plan and one huge lineup, PHAT08 is looking good. check out more details here
