Outdoor Styles

Aotearoa Outdoor Styles

These words aren't new to the New Zealand music scene. The phrase "Outdoor Styles" came from the group that has had such a large influence on the Outdoor Music Festival scene in New Zealand, Salmonella Dub. The Dub produced a track named Outdoor Styles which features on their Remixes and radio Cuts and Colonial Dubs EP releases. Salmonella Dub has featured The Gathering in their music videos (ie. For the love of it off the legendary Killervision album. > Watch it). They have featured in the line up of so many legendary outdoor music festivals from the late 1990's, often being posted as the headline act. In addition to this, Salmonella Dub joined the "Outdoor Styles" tour of 2001.

So it is with much love and respect that we use their term for creating interest and excitement about the Aotearoa Outdoor Style through this website.

Which Events "Qualify" for outdoorstyles.co.nz?

Outdoor Music Festivals are more than just outdoor gigs, they are an environment and an experience.

There are a few basic elements that define an event as an Aotearoa Outdoor Style. This ain't no science, it's purely about the art. It's easier for us to say that events like the Big Day Out or "Music in the park", while being outdoors, don't quite fit the profile of the Aotearoa Outdoor Style. It generally involves getting a bit out of town.

Brief history Aotearoa Outdoor Styles

This will take a while to write properly (like 10 years?) but for the moment we'll list a few past events that have all helped to shape the Aotearoa Outdoor Style and are probably missed by many. We're actually hoping that you guys will help me out a little bit here as well, because we can't get it right all the time. If you're keen to contribute, then get in touch.

At the moment the best source of this information is Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_music_festivals
